Procedural Update: NUMB3RS’ “Twisted Couples”

NUMB3RS - Charlie (David Krumholz) and Amita’s (Navi Rawat) in “Waste Not”

Let me first state this simple fact: I think CBS’ NUMB3RS is one of the best TV shows out there. Ok, I don’t understand the math and sometimes, I even think that they are making it up a little. Nonetheless, it’s a great show. With that said, the romances that have been written in the show are getting harder and harder to believe.

First, there is Charlie (David Krumholtz) and Amita (Navi Rawat). Now this love story looks OK on the surface. But the obvious lack of spark between the two characters makes this hard to believe. Now, we can blame the actors for not having any connection or we can blame the writers for trying to jam this down our throats. For crying out loud, in the episode “In Security”, Charlie and Amita have a kiss that looks staged at best. They need to squash this story right away because it is just getting worse.

Second, there is Don (Rob Morrow) and Liz (Aya Sumika). Talk about on and off again. One episode she is the one, the next she is a problem. Now, they need to settle this story as well. Let’s commit here.

Last but certainly not least, the romance between Larry (Peter MacNicol) and Megan (Diane Farr). Now the writers have the audacity to make us believe that she understands that he wants to live in a monastery and that he understands that she loves him for that. They must think that we are high on crack or something. Don’t get me started on the weird romantic moments that they share together.

Look, here’s the thing. Numbers can do one of two things to make this right: either stick to crime solving and keep the romance to a minimum or write some more compelling storylines than Megan dating a homeless professor.

In the meantime, check out the pictures of this week’s Numb3rs episode “Primacy” here.

Cheers

Dude, you need to chill out.
The love stories are not that bad and I think they fold into the show well.
I think Don and Lisa make a cute couple. I sorta agree with you on Megan and Larry, it’s a bit of a stretch.
Still love the show, though. Makes Fridays Less Dull.

Hey, I agree with your view of the couples on this show. The show is one of the best on the air. Charlie and Amita? You are right, there is no chemistry. Her character is also a bit to pushy, and it doesn’t work for me. as for Don and Liz, according to the episode from 11/2/07 they already boke up, cause Don didn’t tell her of a relationship from five years ago. what the heck. That was from five years ago, she doesn’t need a list of every single relationship Don had ever had, does she? This couple just didn’t work either. She is too insecure in her relationship with Don. Yes, he may have been a woman’s man, but still, cut the guy some slack. In watching Rob’s protrayal of the character, it didn’t seem like there was much fizzle, in the recent episodes leading up to the split. He needs someone who doesn’t come accross as too abrasive. Just my thoughts.

Megan and Larry? Oh gees, where do I begin,, Too weird,.

Right on target. Love the show - hate the couples. The best couple on the show is the dad and Charlie’s boss…they are great and believable.

I think one of the reasons these couples seem so off is that the best relationships of the show seem to be male-male friendships or family ties: don and charlie, the two brothers and their dad, charlie and larry, david and colby, don and his therapist, don and the team–they are largely homosocial relationships that are complicated and caring, which is great to see on television.

Although I must say, out of the three relationships mentioned above, I think I was most rooting for Don and Liz. I thought maybe they had potential.

I have to agree in some aspects as far as the romance. There’s something I find really uncomfortable with the Megan and Dr. Larry love plot. I agree with Proteanlives that Don and Liz had something that I found compelling in their relationship.

As for Charlie and Amita, I do think they make them bump heads too much. Maybe it means that if they do fall for each other, it’ll be really earth-shattering? I don’t know. I’ll keep watching for now though. :)

Hmm… I agree on the Don/Liz. Thank God they finally settled that one out.

I’m a bit of a Charlie/Amita junkie :D I don’t mind them together. The more I see, the more I love. Just a little pointer too, Navi Rawat wasn’t even in ‘In Security’, so I don’t know what kiss you are referring to.

I think Megan and Larry are cute… but that’s about it. It’s a pretty unbelievable relationship.

I just don’t think they should ahve that many relationships in a procedural drama. It’s okay to have them on the side, or in my opinion, a max 2 main ones, but what Numb3rs has is too many.

One of the best shows on the box though! :D

[...] NUMB3RS is back with its first post-strike episode. I am happy to see the Epps Brothers back in action. I hope that the writers will put some meat behind some of the story lines, especially the unlikely romance. [...]

Got something to say?
