MEDIUM - Season Four's First Two Episode Review

MEDIUM - Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois in “An Then…”

Daemon's TV has been very fortunate to get screeners of the two first episodes of Season Four of MEDIUM. Here's our review of these episodes:

1. "And Then" Airing Monday January 7, 2008 at 10 PM

The first Medium episode of the season "And Then" starts a little while after Allison's (Patricia Arquette) secret was revealed to the world. The police and the DA's office don't want anything to do with her so she's out of a job. Joe is still looking for a job but no luck there either. Basically, things look kind of bleak for the Dubois Family. On top of all that, the powers that be still send Allison some very strong visions of a kidnapped child. Desperate to share her insights with someone, Allison calls a tip line which leads her to meet an unusual private investigator Cynthia Keener (Angelica Huston).
What to say about this Medium episode "And Then"? Well this was by far one of the best Medium episodes. What a way to start a season, NBC! The story lines are compelling and realistic. The characters are gripping, especially Angelica Huston who comes in for a multi episode stint as a tough as nails investigator. What I particularly enjoyed was an instance of parallel editing where two story lines are occurring simultaneously with an emotional version of the song "My Favorite Things" from the "The Sound of Music" playing in the background. This is by far one of the best scenes I have seen in TV all year. It is a testament to the tremendous quality of this TV show.

2. "But for the Grace of God" Airing Monday January 14, 2008 at 10 PM

The Second Medium episode of the fourth season centers around Ariel who is in conflict with her parents on a very teenage issue: going out to hang out with a boy. In the background, the current investigation focuses on a teenage girl who is missing. Joe and Allison find themselves trying desperately to fight on both fronts with mixed results. Angelica Huston returns as Cynthia Keener, the investigator.
Again, another outstanding episode. The story takes a very original turn and resolves things in a very unexpected way. The moral of the story is a sort combination of "Be careful of what you wish for" meets "Trust no one", at least for Ariel. I like how Medium is not afraid to go far in the dark depths of the human condition. And I also appreciate that the characters manage to cope in spite of that, which is a welcome reprieve from the pervasive and whiny "Why me" victim mentality we see on TV shows these days.

If these two episodes are bellwethers for the rest of the Medium Season, then I can't wait for the rest. Medium is one of the few quality shows out there and the more of it we get, the better off we will be.

Stay tuned!

I love your comments and love the episode "But for the Grace of God". I've always enjoyed the music in Medium but can never find it.
During this episode Allison was holding articles of the missing girl and there was a song playing in the background. Do you know the artist and title of the song?

I can't remember what song that was. I was trying to find a music guide for Medium but so far no luck. Do you know some of the lyrics by any chance?

I found the song :) It's called The Pretender by the Foo Fighters. Some other songs that I've heard you might like are:

Like A Star by Corinne Bailey Rae
You Give Me Something by James Morrison
    Waiting for You by Seal

    Enjoy!!
