TBS Press Day: MY BOYS

May 30, 2008

My Boys - Cast

It’s time for more information about our press set visit of three of TBS’ shows, including Frank TV, The Bill Engvall Show (which you can read about here), and My Boys.

The set visit I would like to talk about is MY BOYS, which premieres on June 12 at 9:30pm on TBS.

This was another fun visit. The cast is incredibly funny and they are probably one of the nicest cast I have met (along with the cast of The Bill Engvall Show).

Even though I call this a set visit, I guess it wasn’t exactly a set visit, although we did visit the Crowley’s set, but more on that later.

Let’s start at the beginning. In order to get some information about the second season of My Boys, we sat down for lunch with the cast and started digging for scoops. Of course, the question on everybody’s mind was: “Who is on the plane with PJ?” Well, we asked and asked, and begged, even tried some bribing, nothing worked, their lips were sealed. (Well actually Jim Gaffigan (Andy) did give us an answer but it most probably isn’t the one you were looking for: “The pilot is on the plane.” Ha!) So unfortunately I won’t be able to give you any scoops on that, but what I can tell you is that everybody on the cast was surprised as to the identity of the mystery person. In fact, none of them got it right, but from what I gather it starts the ball rolling on the whole season.

First Look: CBS’ THE MENTALIST - Picture & Videos

May 30, 2008

The Mentalist

Now that we have learned a little more about CBS’ new primetime schedule, it’s time to take a closer look at all of their new shows.

Next up, THE MENTALIST starring Simon Baker and Robin Tunney.

This sounds like another procedural. I always find it hard to judge a show solely on a promo, but it can give you an indication of whether or not it looks good. The Mentalist looks pretty good to me. I usually enjoy Simon Baker, so that’s already a plus. As for the story, well it’s not really that original, I mean it does sound like Psych a little bit but a much darker version. However, depending on how it’s developed and done, it could be another success for CBS. I am looking forward to checking out the pilot.

Synopsis: Simon Baker (”The Devil Wears Prada”) stars as Patrick Jane, a detective and independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation. Within the Bureau, Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. Jane’s role in cracking a series of tough high-profile cases is greatly valued by his fellow agents. However, no-nonsense Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, “Prison Break”) openly resists having Jane in her unit and alternates between reluctantly acknowledging Jane’s usefulness and blasting him for his theatrics, narcissism and dangerous lack of boundaries. Lisbon’s team includes agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang, “Rambo”), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman, “The Nine”), and rookie member Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti, “The O.C.”), who all think Jane’s a loose cannon but admire his charm and knack for clearing cases.

Interview: JASON DOHRING from MOONLIGHT (Part Two)

May 29, 2008

Jason Dohring

Here it is finally, Part Two of our JASON DOHRING interview from our set of the late MOONLIGHT. I thought that some of you might still be interested in reading what else he had to say. (You can view part one here.)

Enjoy the interview!

What is like going from being in “Veronica Mars” where you played a young character to “Moonlight” where you play a vampire that is centuries old?

Jason Dohring: It’s tough, just because when you play somebody who’s been around one lifetime it’s a bit easier to understand, they have more of a limited experience than someone who’s been around eight lifetimes. That’s just been kind of the challenge. There is no new situation, everything is kind of you’ve seen before, so when you give advice to Mick or something like that it’s just “Please, this happened to me 200 years ago.”

Early Review: USA Network’s IN PLAIN SIGHT

May 29, 2008

In Plain Sight

And USA Network strikes once more with another great original TV show, IN PLAIN SIGHT, which premieres on June 1 at 10pm.

I guess you could call it the female version of Burn Notice. It’s witty, smart, and funny. I have already seen the first three episodes and I am sold. This is a great summer show to look forward to.

Mary McCormack plays Mary Shannon, a U.S. Marshal working in the witness protection program. Her partner Marshall Mann is played by Fred Weller. The rest of the cast includes Lesley Ann Warren who plays Jinx, Mary’s mother who lives with her, Nichole Hiltz who plays Brandi, Mary’s younger sister, Paul Ben-Victor plays Mary and Marshall’s boss, Cristián de la Fuente plays Mary’s on-off boyfriend, and Todd Williams plays the local police detective who regularly crosses paths with Mary.

First Look: ABC’s LIFE ON MARS - Picture and Video

May 29, 2008

Life On Mars

LIFE ON MARS is one of ABC’s new show this Fall. I was a big fan of the original British series of the same name, and so was curious to see if they were able to reproduce the same great show in the US. Unfortunately, with the exception of The Office, American shows based on good British shows usually don’t do well.

And so with that in mind, I took a look at the promo and I have to say that I was a little disappointed by what I saw. None of the original feel to the show is there and casting is not great.

In the original, John Simm played the main character, Sam Tyler, and if you watch Doctor Who, then you know how good of an actor he is (he played The Master). The rest of the cast is wonderful as well. I think the reason why Life On Mars was so good is because the cast was relatable, and I’m not sure the American cast is (nothing against the actors, but I just don’t think they fit the part).

Interview: TODD WILLIAMS from IN PLAIN SIGHT

May 29, 2008

Todd Williams

Recently, Daemon’s TV took part in a conference call with TODD WILLIAMS who plays a homicide detective, Bobby D, in the new USA Network show, IN PLAIN SIGHT.

Todd Williams talked about his character, how he liked shooting in Albuquerque, and more.

Don’t forget to watch In Plain Sight on June 1st at 10pm on USA Network.

For now, enjoy the interview below.

How is it different playing a detective within WITSEC in relation to playing a detective on a show like “Third Watch”?

Todd Williams: Well, see the thing is that Bobby D’s character is a local detective, so he has no affiliation with WITSEC. So, it’s relatively the same thing, just a different type of guy.

Can you explain the long story behind your name?

TW: Yes, you know what? His last name is Dershowitz. They really didn’t give me a rundown on what his story was, so I was trying to make it up in my own mind. I figured that perhaps his grandfather’s name was Dershowitz and he had married a black woman and had his father who is bi-racial, but his name is Dershowitz, and then he married a black woman. I don’t know, but I figured that genetically maybe that would make sense. Yes, that’s all I could come up with.
