SUPERNATURAL "In The Beginning" (Season 4 Episode 3) Early Review
Update: Well, now that you have all seen the episode "In The Beginning," I feel the need to clear up some of the "controversy" that seemed to arise today amongst Dean fans. From what I understand some people read in another review that it was revealed in this episode that Dean was the cause of everything that happened, which you now know is not true. Here is what I think is true:
Castiel says to Dean that it was Mary's destiny to make a deal with YED and that there was nothing he could have ever done to stop it. Yes, he did bring Mary to YED in the episode, but even if he hadn't they would have met anyway. Why, well because it was meant to be because it was Dean and Sam's destiny to become hunters. What I found brilliant is that even though some things are destined to happened, there are also choices to be made. And in this case it's all about Sam's choice, is he going to choose good, or is he going to choose evil? That's what we are all dying to find out. Like I said, brilliant!
I don't know what the writers of SUPERNATURAL took this season, but it's working. Tonight's new episode, "In The Beginning," is another must watch.
This episode is the long awaited "Back to the Future" one, where Dean goes back to the past and meets his parents, John and Mary, when they were still dating.
"In The Beginning" really explores the root of the Winchester brothers. Not only do we learn more about what John was like when he was young, we also for the first time learn more about their mom, Mary. I can't giveaway too much about that, but trust me it will change your outlook on quite a few things.
I also have to mention an emotional scene between Dean and Mary, which was just amazing. I have to praise Jensen Ackles so much for his work on it. I think there is always a risk when two young actors play mother and son (or brother and sister) that it will come out as the wrong type of love, but not here. The relationship is clear, this is his mom, you just see in his eyes how much he loves her, but in the right way (if that makes sense). If you are not touched by Jensen Ackles' performance, then you are made of stone. Definitely one of my favorite scenes in Supernatural.
On to happier things, the best part of the episode has to be one of the best quotes in Supernatural's history:
"Sammy wherever you are, mom’s a babe. I’m going to hell…again.†- Dean
You can actually watch two clips from Supernatural "In The Beginning," which include that quote.
Pretty much 99% of the episode is spent in the past, but in the last few minutes of the show (we are back in the present at that point) Castiel reveals something to Dean that he (or I) was not expecting.
Finally, the episode ends with the 3 worst words you will see on television: To be continued... (I think I let out a scream of pain at that point, how can they make us wait a week?!)
It's time for you guys to share once you have seen the episode. What did you think of Mary? What about Castiel's revelation in the end?

I can't wait to watch.
Is it possible to e-mail me those three last words of the episode?
Hi Jaz,
I meant that the last 3 words we see on screen are "To be continued" which means we have to wait another week to see what happens next.
I think you will definitely like this episode, especially if you are a Dean fan. Let me know what you think once you've seen it.
What did Castiel say to Dean?
I'm prepared for everything.
Sorry for my mistake, lol
Well, I'm either going to love this episode, or going to hate it enough to just drop myself to casual viewer and catch it if I can. If Kripke has screwed the Dean fans again, by making Dean nothing more than Sam's guard dog, again, I've had it. When Kripke promised to make Dean part of the mytharc, I expected Dean's role to change into something about Dean for once, not about Sam, still. How sick am I of Sam being so important that the world, heaven and earth revolve only because Sam exists? If I'm wrong, I'll eat my hat....well, I would if I had one. LOL And I hope I'm wrong, but for some reason, highly unlikely with the way Kripke drools over the Sam character and Carve seems to think that Sam is the Second Coming of Christ. Oh, wait! He is, isn't he? Pft.
strangelove: It's kind of funny but I have comments on my review of this episode that are completely the opposite of yours and who feel that Dean is getting the better storylines. I don't want to say anything more about the episode itself but it will be interesting to know your opinion after you watch...
Sandie, this is killing me... another review suggested that Dean was inserted into the mytharc in a bad way, like that he had been the cause of everything bad that happened to the family by some screwup or decision he made in the past. Should I be bracing myself, as a Dean fan, for everything to be his fault?
Rae:
Fancy meeting you here. I wrote this before seeing your posts and I will reserve my judgment.
Thanks and maybe I won't get an ulcer before tonight.
Or maybe I still will. LOL
Jaz:
You will have to wait because not only am I not allowed to tell you, but you really have to watch the whole episode to understand, it would just ruin it. Trust me it's better if you wait just a few extra hours.
strangelove:
As a Dean fan, I absolutely loved this episode. To me it feels like this season Sam and Dean are put at the same level, meaning they each have something to do. Of course Sam is still very important, but right now Dean is as important. You'll see.
Ana:
I think I see why someone would think that, but that means they really didn't pay attention or get the point of the episode. I will say that it's not true and Castiel makes a point about it towards the end. Trust me, as a Dean fan myself, I think this is one of the best storylines for him so far, in a good way.
I'm really curious to find out what you all think once you've seen the episode. I hope I am not making your expectations too high, but I thought it was a really great episode.
Can you please give Dean fans some peace of mind. Alot of Dean girls are freaking out over a reviewers comment of Dean being ruined or the reason for all this and we need some reasurence. This would be the dumbest move Kripke made and I cannot belive it but I need some reasurences.
Hi Katie,
Once again, I'm not sure why someone would write that except if they misunderstood the episode or wanted to get you guys all worked up over nothing. But as far as I'm concerned Dean is not ruined at all in this episode, quite the contrary.
They said he is resonsible for everything that happens to his family including all the death's and what not and I just want to know if the show makes it clear none of this is Dean's fault because some fans are really worried. Sorry to sound like a pain but I just wanted to know.
Hi Katie,
Do you have the link to the review, I'm really curious about it, because once again that person totally missed the whole point of the episode.
I understand why this would worry you guys, but trust me the writers of Supernatural are smart, they would never write anything making all of that Dean's fault. That is not at all what happens. Obviously I can't give anything away, but once the episode has aired I'll make sure to write up what I think about the way the episode was interpreted.
Since you guys are real fans, you will understand this episode the way Kripke meant it. Make sure you pay attention to what Castiel tells Dean towards the end.
Let me know what you think once you've seen it and if you think that other review was right or if they got it totally wrong like I think.
Thanks for your words of reassurance.
I was really looking forward to this episode until a few (other) reviewers started to stir things up regarding Dean's role in the mytharc.
As you said maybe they missed the point, were trying to stir things up to increase traffic to their websites or they were trying reassure the more rabidly irate Sam fans and overcompensated by trying to make Dean look bad. Regardless, they put a real damper on my enthusiasm for this episode.
I guess that will teach me to be very selective in my pre-episode review reading from now on. You're still on my list. I'm looking forward to reading your interpretation of the events once the epi has aired.
Ok so now everybody has seen the episode, is everyone ok with what Dean's story was?
I added some of my thoughts in the review as promised. I hope you guys are as excited as I am for next week's episode.
Well, I've seen the episode. And it was amazing as far as acting and delivery. The people who are saying Dean caused all the problems have it absolutely wrong. He was never meant to stop anything, just to witness, which is even more heartbreaking. I think if he had a Mystery Spot episode with this plot, it would end the same every time.
I am disappointed about the mytharc, in general, though. They didn't reveal anything that most of us haven't speculated since the beginning, and I don't agree at all that Dean is now as important as Sam. I think he got shafted royally, and I'm gravely disappointed. It's just as I suspected, that the beginning of the season was Dean heavy just to bait Dean girls into sticking around a little longer.
Well, my little longer has just worn out. I've had as much of the bait and switch as I can stand. I'm really disappointed.
i'm so overwhelmed that i can't speak.
I can't make a proper episode review.
All i'm saying is...BRING ON THE WINCHESTERS PREQUELS NOW!!!
'In the beginning' was one of the episodes that you can watch all the time at any time and recommend to non viewers of the show to see how everything began.
What an EXCELLENT choice of the actors.
Mitch Pileggi gave me the creeps. DUDE, he is an ACTOR!
Young BuffyMary and John stole my heart and my whole existence.
I want stories about them, please?
Now we know how Mary knew the YED. Who expected that Mary's deal based on John's death?
John believed in 'happily ever after endings'. So we realize now that Dean looked more to Mary and Sam to John.
Impala love!
COLT!!
Have i mentioned how much i love that early 70's era?
Castiel with Dean? Can i watch them all the time?
Evil, sneaky Sammy, where are you going? Use your powers for good hiding them from Dean who must stop you??
To be continued killed my life!
I totally agree that this was a fantastic episode that shed light on the entire mythology of the Winchesters and their family saga. Castiel made a point of telling Dean he 'had to stop it' but didn't explain that until he was back from his Marty McFly trip. He couldn't have changed the outcome because despite everything he did, it was already destined. Liddy was Mary's friend, they were already tracking the demon, and although they didn't know what it was, it would have found them since it was so close already. None of it was 'caused' by Dean and he did his best -- despite understanding the consequences -- to try to stop it.
Fantastic script, acting, direction. It did answer a lot of questions and posed just as many like this intelligent show has always done. I am completely loving this entire season and look forward to learning more about Dean's new quest as well as Sam's choices in the recent past and future. Can Dean save his brother? Will Sam want to be saved? What do you do when the person you are most afraid of is the person you are most afraid for? This is truly becoming epic.
Dean is just as important as Sammy. More of the storyline has been about him since this season started. If you are sticking around just to watch Dean, maybe you're not as big of a fan as you think. As beautiful as he may me, and he is, Follow the storyline, it's got a lot to give. Dean is basically God's right hand man right now, and Sammy has demon powers. Something big is going to happen between the brothers before the show finally ends. I'm so curious as to what.
The episode was really good and my respect for Dean improves day by day.I feel that this season Dean is given more importance, also I dont understand why the hell Sam is going with Ruby...as Dean is back. They should hunt Lilith together and Castiel "WOW" he is really good and I feel he has a very important role to play in this season
I loved everything about this episode. There really is nothing more to say. Except Jensen Ackles go get your Emmy.
