Episode Synopsis: UGLY BETTY Season 4 Premiere - In the first hour, "The Butterfly Effect" Part 1 (8:00-9:00 p.m.), Betty finds that everything is changing as she begins her new job as associate features editor, especially since her boss is her ex-boyfriend, Matt Hartley, who is still unhappy about their breakup. In addition, Betty's new officemate, Megan (Smith Cho), openly resents her, while Marc is constantly undermining her because he felt he was more deserving of the promotion. Meanwhile, without Betty as his assistant, Daniel is adrift, still mourning the loss of his wife, Molly. Betty tries to help Megan out on an assignment and connects with a thoughtful insect jewelry designer, Olivia (Lynn Redgrave), while Justin starts high school and is victimized by bullies-but won't tell his mom, Hilda. Claire Meade is finding that her power struggle at the company has her sitting pretty - for the moment -- opposite Wilhemina, who lost her claim to the Meade throne last season. But Wili has perhaps an even bigger problem than job security - she is harboring a secret at home that is driving Marc to distraction.
In "The Butterfly Effect," Part 2 (9:00-10:00 p.m.), Betty gets to run her own Mode photo shoot at the United Nations to promote their anti-malaria initiative, "Nothing but Nets," but her big opportunity becomes a baptism by fire when Daniel's neediness takes its toll, and Matt openly demoralizes her. Last season Betty was at a precipice, her stellar work in the Young Editors Training Initiative had resulted in a promotion to Associate Editor – but with a catch, in that she finds herself working for her ex-boyfriend who is not at all happy with the way their relationship ended. With her new job, Betty realizes she must polish her look to reflect her new position, but she's still our beloved Ugly Betty at heart. Her status at Mode comes at a price — Daniel, whom she once assisted, is adrift without her as he grapples with the death of his beloved wife, Molly, and Marc St. James, Wilhelmina's loyal assistant, is out to undermine her at every turn, because he begrudges Betty her promotion, since he was in the running for it and feels he was more deserving. In addition, Betty's ex-boyfriend, Matt, is now her boss, since his dad is now Meade's major investor, and Matt can't seem to put the past behind him, wreaking havoc in Betty's professional life. Meanwhile, Claire Meade is finding that her power struggle at the company has her sitting pretty – for the moment -- opposite Wilhemina, who lost her claim to the Meade throne last season. Willie is more determined than ever to find Connor, who bankrupted the company, plus she's harboring a secret at home. And Mode's receptionist, Amanda, does some soul-searching about her future at the company. Back in Queens, Betty's nephew, Justin, struggles to fit in at school, while Hilda worries that her son is pulling away from her, and Ignacio counsels her that it's all part of parenting a teen.
