RESCUE ME Season 5 Premiere Review

Denis Leary and Michael J. Fox on RESCUE ME

Fans of the Emmy nominated FX series, RESCUE ME have something to look forward to this week – season 5 premieres on Tuesday April 7th at 10 pm. It's been two years since Season 4 ended, so for those of you not familiar with the show, or for those that need a refresher, Rescue Me follows the lives of a group of New York city fire fighters post 9/11. The focus is on Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary), your typical smart ass'd, angry, recovering alcoholic, new yorker. He lost his best friend/cousin in 9/11 and he's still visited by his ghost from time to time. During the various seasons we've followed Tommy and his interactions with his work, family, and relationships (none of which I would call conventional). Season 4 ended with the death of Tommy's father. We also saw Tommy's daughter, Colleen, possibly starting a relationship with 'Black Sean'. This left us with some big questions going into the new season. To be honest, I don't know where I stand with this show. It consistently delivers on acting, writing, and plot but it's also centered around one of the most tragic events in American history - an event that took place only 3 years after the show premiered. This begs the question, is it too soon? The fact that it's in its 5th year and has already been approved for its 6th tells us the majority has spoken, but I've always been curious about how people personally tied to the world trade center attacks feel about the show? I think this is actually a bigger question for a different day.

Anyway, tonight I had the privilege of getting a sneak peak at season 5. This season holds a lot of great surprises for its fans. You can look forward to a new love interest for Janet (a big name guest star who came as a pleasant surprise, as you can see in the picture above). There is also a new plot surrounding the events leading up to 9/11 which is going to spark some great conversations as well as some controversy. The plot between Colleen, Sean and Tommy is really developed throughout this season, with lots of laughs and cringe-worthy moments to keep viewers interested. I will give one more small *spoiler* and say that one of the sub plots involves the guys opening a bar together. For anyone who has been a fan of the show, you won't be disappointed in the new season. If you haven't checked out the show, I highly recommend it, especially if you're a guy.
