Last night was the season 5 finale of The Closer titled "Dead Man's Hand". Mary McDonnell returns to the show as the ever-popular Captain Raydor, she comes to Major Crimes to ask Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) to solve a case of possible domestic abuse that involves a female officer working under her.

The female officer hasn't pressed charges against her husband (who allegedly has abused her). Brenda is hesitant to push the investigation any further, because she has been instructed by her boss Chief Pope to not to stir things up in the case.

The episode swings into action when the case is interrupted by a murder. The female detective who was being abused by her husband, allegedly, kills her husband in self-defense. Captain Raydor and Brenda, are partially responsible for the death, as they did not pursue the allegations of abuse extensively.

Now both Chief Pope and Captain Raydor are both putting on pressure on Brenda, for multiple reasons. Captain Raydor blames Brenda for the murder, while Chief Pope thinks she has been putting her personal issues ahead of her job; part of which is her issues with Captain Raydor, who fittingly feels the same way towards her.

The murder is eventually solved, thanks to a ballistics test on the murder weapon. The viewers learn that the barrels of two guns have been switched, and the murder was premeditated by the female officer.

Meanwhile, to complicate matters, Brenda's life at home proves to be challenging. Fritz (Jon Tenney) is a suddenly very cranky with Brenda who doesn't seem to understand why her husband is acting this way. It turns out that Fritz has been offered a major promotion that would effectively transfer him back to Washington D.C.

We don't find out, if Brenda will follow Fritz to D.C. or stay with Major Crimes for her own career. The last scene shows Fritz and Brenda going into their bedroom, in the heat of the moment. The audience is left to wonder, will Brenda choose her husband over her career next season?

THE CLOSER "Dead Man's Hand" Recap (Season Finale)

I had an opportunity to watch an advanced copy of the season finale of THE CLOSER "Dead Man's Hand" Season 5 Episode 15 which airs tomorrow Monday December 21 at 9/8c on TNT.

This episode features guest star Mary McDonnell who reprises her role as Capt. Raydor and comes to Major Crimes to ask their help to solve a case of potential domestic abuse that involves one of her subordinates. After some friction, the case heats up as a shooting complicates things.

As season finale goes, this was not one of the best but there is something to be said in seeing Mary McDonell and Kyra Sedgwick go head to head during the "Dead Man's Hand" episode. These ladies are true master of their crafts and make you want to root for each of them to prevail (Although I always lean towards Major Crimes). It makes for some very enjoyable moments throughout the episode.

One thing that struck me was that for the first time, I see a real potential for a The Closer spin-off with Mary McDonell running internal affairs and busting down crooked cops. Hell I would so watch that show. There was a rumor in Sept 2008 of a potential Spin off that would be called "The Fixer". I think that it is close to come to light and I suspect that they will go with my idea. (Yes I said it, it's my idea and I expect full credits)

Sosie Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick's daughter is once playing the part of Charlie, Brenda's niece. I really really am glad that she is given an opportunity to show her acting abilities. I usually am not a big fan of celebrity kids riding on their parent's coatails but in this case, I am glad that an exception was made.

This episode should be interesting, mainly because Sosie Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick's daughter is back playing the part of Charlie, Brenda's niece. Last episode "Identity Theft" showed that she definitely had the acting chops of her parents. She has a certain vulnerability that translates into a powerful performance. All and all, I can't wait to see this episode

Gabriel is studying for the detective exam, so Brenda uses the case as a teaching tool. Meanwhile, Brenda’s niece, Charlie (Sosie Bacon), pulls a stunt so severe, she and Fritz are ready to put her on a plane home immediately.

THE CLOSER "Strike Three" Season 5 Episode 7

I just saw an advance copy of the new THE CLOSER "Tapped Out" (Season 5 Episode 6) airing Monday, July 13 at 9/8c on TNT. In "Tapped Out", the team investigates the death of a reality show “pick-up artist” about to roll out a new TV show. Things go downhill when a police impersonator steals the evidence in the case and conducts his own investigation. **SPOILER ALERT** The funny part is that he steals the evidence from none other than Chief Pope, Provenza and Flynn.

It was a funny episode as it revolves mostly around the team trying to undo the mess caused by the impersonator. This leads to some pretty funny moments with Brenda and her team always finding themselves a step behind the impostor. Imagine being a cop arriving to inform the family of the deceased, only to find out that another "cop" has beat you to the punch. Now imagine that this happens at every stage of the investigation. Welcome to the world of police impersonation.

Overall this is an entertaining episode with a classic killer ending. Man, I love this show.

THE CLOSER "Products of Discovery" (Season 5 Episode 1)

I was fortunate enough to get an early look of the first episode of Season 5 of THE CLOSER "Products of Discovery".

In this episode, Brenda is investigating a quadruple murder while dealing with Provenza being in a pissy mood.

If I am to be honest, there is really not much to say about this episode aside from the fact that it was good but not great. Granted, a good "The Closer" episode is better than the grand majority of the shows on TV. But still as season premieres go, this one was a little blah for me.

The investigation in itself was alright but the characters in the story were much more compelling. Overall, it is a good episode worth watching.

Note: Kudos to the actor who plays the father of the victims. He has very emotional scenes that he delivers wonderfully. I know I have seen him in other shows but I can't remember where. I looked everywhere for his name but I can't find it. If anyone can help me with that, I would greatly appreciate it

HAWTHORNE – New series to launch Tuesday, June 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Jada Pinkett Smith (The Women, The Matrix trilogy) is the latest talented actress to join TNT's line-up of strong, complex female characters, following in the footsteps of Kyra Sedgwick on The Closer and Holly Hunter of Saving Grace. In this character-driven medical drama, Pinkett Smith plays Christina Hawthorne, a compassionate and headstrong Chief Nursing Officer heading up a group of dedicated nurses at Richmond Trinity Hospital who spend long days and nights on the hospital's front lines. Hawthorne is the kind of nurse you want on your side when you or someone you love is in the hospital. This fast-paced, undercover police drama from prolific producer Jerry Bruckheimer (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Without a Trace) stars Golden Globe® winner Dylan McDermott (The Practice, TNT's The Grid), Logan Marshall-Green (The O.C.), Omari Hardwick (TNT's Saved) and Nicki Aycox (Supernatural). The series follows the exploits of a crack undercover team of police officers so covert, many of their own colleagues don't even know they are involved. Leading the group is Carter Shaw (McDermott), a deeply wounded character who has lost his wife and much of his former life as he struggles to bring down bad guys through complex undercover assignments. His team includes Ty Curtis (Hardwick), a recently married cop who struggles with personal relationships he has developed while undercover; Dean Bendis (Marshall-Green), a shoot-from-the-hip officer whose activities make fellow team members wonder if he has gone over to the bad side; and Jaimie Allen (Aycox), a green patrol cop brought in because of her excellent skill in lying and a shady past.
